System Won't Turn On

When neither heat nor AC will start, the cause is often simple—a tripped breaker, dead thermostat or full condensate pan—but it can also be a failed control board or transformer.

Call: 1 (800) 555-0199

Warning signs

  • Blank thermostat screen
  • Nothing happens when you change the setting
  • The system starts briefly, then shuts off
  • Water in the drain pan under the indoor unit

What to do right now

  1. Replace thermostat batteries
  2. Check breakers for both the indoor and outdoor units
  3. Check the furnace door is fully closed (a safety switch stops the system)
  4. Check whether the condensate pan is full—a float switch will shut the system off

What the HVAC technician will do

A technician will trace power from the breaker to the thermostat, test the transformer, fuses, safety switches and control board.

What affects the cost

Fuses, float switches and thermostats are inexpensive; control boards and transformers cost more. Pricing is set by the independent provider—ask for the trip charge and an estimate before work begins.

Safety first

  • Carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Get everyone outside and call 911.
  • Smell gas? Leave now and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't flip switches.
  • Dangerous heat or cold in your home? Don't wait for a repair—go somewhere safe and check on vulnerable family and neighbors.
