Emergency AC Repair

During extreme heat, a dead air conditioner is a health risk, not just discomfort. Heat illness is a real danger for older adults, young children, pets and anyone with medical conditions.

Warning signs

  • Warm air from the vents
  • The outdoor unit isn't running or hums without starting
  • Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil
  • Water leaking from the indoor unit
  • Breaker trips when the AC starts

What to do right now

  1. Set the thermostat to COOL and a few degrees below room temperature
  2. Check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect switch
  3. Replace a dirty filter
  4. If the coil or lines are iced, turn the system off and run FAN only to thaw it
  5. Stay cool: close blinds, use fans, drink water, and go to a cooled place if the house gets dangerously hot

What the HVAC technician will do

A technician will test the capacitor, contactor, refrigerant charge, fan motors and drain line—the most common causes of a sudden AC failure.

What affects the cost

A failed capacitor or contactor is a relatively inexpensive fix. Refrigerant leaks, compressor or coil failures cost much more. After-hours rates apply. Pricing is set by the independent provider—ask for the trip charge and an estimate before work begins.

Safety first

  • Carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Get everyone outside and call 911.
  • Smell gas? Leave now and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't flip switches.
  • Dangerous heat or cold in your home? Don't wait for a repair—go somewhere safe and check on vulnerable family and neighbors.
